Newsletter | Issue #1

April 27th, 2024

Introduction

Hey everyone! Every week, I’ll be sending a newsletter going over recent and upcoming events along with any important messages from me to you. Not everyone has Discord and I wanted to create a way to keep everyone in the club up to date on everything!

Soon, I’ll be accepting original submissions from club members to feature in the newsletter. That means poetry, artwork, short stories, op-eds, and more! Once the newsletter is open for submissions, you’ll be able to send them straight to the club e-mail address. This club is a community and I want your voice to be heard!

The Way of the Turtle

by Avery Hart

When I came up with the idea of a turtle being the club logo, I had no prior knowledge of the spiritual meaning behind turtles. It wasn’t until Steven (our amazing kavatender at Kava Kula and culinary artist behind The Peppered Cloak) told me about it at the first club meeting on Wednesday that I heard about it. I honestly just picked a turtle because I personally love them and thought it’d be cute!

Steven shared with me that turtles represent “patience, protection, and being grounded.” He also said they represent “long journeys with good company” and “symbolize the path to peace and harmony with nature.” If there was ever a way to illustrate my vision for the club, it would be that. Unity is meant to protect queer folks and bring them together in a safe and welcoming community. In a wildly conservative state like Florida, this club stands to bring “peace and harmony” to every single one of you. We all deserve a place to go and be ourselves without fear, and I hope that Unity can be that place for you.

Upcoming Events

  • Second club meeting | May 22nd, 2024 at Kava Kula at 7PM

  • Ormond Beach Pride Festival at Fountain Square | Date to be determined (June)
