About Us

Our
Story
Avery Hart, a 24-year-old Daytona State College student, had the idea to start a club for LGBTQ+ adults and allies in Volusia County. He wanted to create something similar to a college GSA (Gender Sexuality Alliance) that would be open and accessible to all. Unity started from a simple idea and quickly grew into an organization of nearly 200 members providing mutual aid to folks all across Volusia County.
In April of 2024, Unity held its very first meeting at Kava Kula, a sober bar in Ormond Beach located in Fountain Square Village. Since then, the organization has held regular meetings every third Wednesday and third Saturday, started Ormond Beach's first annual Pride festival, held a food drive over the holiday season, organized a protest for transgender rights at the Daytona 500, and continues to provide a safe space for the local queer community to find friends and support without fear of judgment and discrimination. As a not-for-profit org, Unity relies on donations from the community to help make Florida a better, safer place for LGBTQ+ friends and family to live.
